United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s annual Write Start Project launched this week, an initiative aimed at providing San Antonio school teachers with classroom supplies ahead of the 2023-24 school year. This year’s Write Start Project will benefit Elementary and Middle School Teachers in Judson ISD and Somerset ISD.

The Write Start Project is a tremendous way to ensure our students succeed in school and have the resources they need while providing much-needed relief to educators financially.

Research shows that nearly all public school teachers pay for their classroom supplies without getting reimbursed. Texas school teachers spend more out of their own pockets than teachers from any other state, spending an estimated $298 million on supplies out of pocket during the 2022-23 school year. The average teacher in the U.S. spends at least $820 out of their own pocket each year.

Items needed include #2 pencils, composition notebooks, crayons, disinfecting wipes, dry-erase markers, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, highlighters, notebook paper, permanent markers, spiral notebooks, sticky notes, zipper storage bags and more.

“Our educators spend their days ensuring our students succeed in school so this is our opportunity to provide them some much-need financial relief and show our appreciation for what they do every single day for our community’s children,” says Jennifer Quintero, Director of Community Engagement for United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. “By donating, volunteering or sponsoring the Write Start Project, you can create a meaningful, multi-generational impact by ensuring that teachers and students have the supplies needed to foster learning.”

Donate by texting WRITESTART to 41444, visiting United Way’s website or by dropping off supplies at any of the following locations:

  • United Way Offices, 700 S. Alamo Street
  • Cavender Buick GMC North, 17811 San Pedro Ave.

  • Cavender Cadillac, 7625 N. Loop 1604 East
  • Cavender Toyota, 5730 NW Loop 410
  • Land Rover San Antonio, 13660 IH-10 West

If you or your company would like to become a sponsor of the Write Start Project and make a lasting impact on the lives of local teachers, please get in touch with Jennifer Quintero at 210.548.2114 or at jquintero@unitedwaysatx.org.

“I have kids in school and often I hear from their teachers about all the different things that they need for their classrooms,” said Sylvia, a volunteer with United Way. “This is a great way to help teachers.”
