Residents Encouraged to Call 2-1-1 Helpline for Assistance with Record Breaking Heat

We encourage all residents to call the free, anonymous 2-1-1 Helpline to be connected to
resources that can provide relief from the intense heat we are experiencing this summer. This past week we hit new daily records for the highest temperatures (105 on Monday), so the time to take action is now before July and August.

Last summer, our community saw a record 59 days of 100+ degree weather. With temperatures between 100 and 108 so far in June, it is critical to prepare as much as possible for the sweltering months ahead.

Seniors over the age of 60 can call 2-1-1 to request a free boxed fan from Project Cool. Project Cool is a partnership between United Way, the City of San Antonio, Catholic Charities and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul that delivers box fans to seniors in the hope of providing lifesaving or utility bill-reducing relief.

Residents who are not senior citizens can still discover critical relief from the heat with 2-1-1. Callers can be connected to resources that can assist with weatherizing their homes, which could provide crucial support should their air conditioning systems fail during the summer. Callers will also be directed to the nearest cooling centers based on their zip code.

We encourage the people of San Antonio to call 2-1-1 to find assistance with the summer heat, whether it be the location of a cooling center, resources on weatherization or seniors in need of a free box fan.
