FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — We are excited to announce that this summer we have awarded 40 United Way Child Care Scholarships to individuals pursuing their education during the Fall 2023 semester. This past round of applications also saw a 10x increase from the prior round, with 73 total applicants!

These scholarships will empower recipients to attain their college degree or critical job training so they can build a more stable economic foundation for their families while not having to worry about the high cost of child care.

“The scholarship was a big financial relief for me,” said Jennifer, a former scholarship recipient who has since graduated with her bachelor’s degree. “I was able to work and take classes and not postpone finishing my degree. Now, I have a degree and a career thanks to the support of the scholarship along with the staff from Women United and United Way.”

United Way’s Child Care Scholarships help parents with the cost of child care while they pursue higher education or job training. The United Way Child Care Scholarship creates a multi-generational impact and strengthens families by providing quality early childhood education for children while their parents build a more stable financial foundation for their future. According to the Economic Policy Institute, the average annual cost of infant child care in Texas is over $9,300.

The average scholarship recipient receives $14,000 per year in quality child care. With these funds, recipients can afford to enroll their children in accredited centers that provide high-quality developmental care.

The United Way Child Care Scholarships are powered by United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s Women United membership group. Women United is comprised of over 3,000 philanthropic women who support the work of United Way to create lasting change in our community. Earlier this year, Women United raised $230,000 for the scholarship program.

Applications will open for Spring 2024 scholarships on August 14th. San Antonio residents are encouraged to apply on uwsatx.org when applications open.
