This year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program was a huge success, bolstering bank accounts and the local economy. More than 18,000 individuals used our free tax preparation service to file their taxes. VITA’s IRS-certified professional volunteers connected filers to more than $36.7 million in tax refunds.
VITA was even more successful this year compared to 2021. Compared to last year:
- 5,000 more individuals used VITA to file their taxes
- $10 million more in refunds were issued
- $4.3 million in savings on tax-preparer fees, $1.3 million more than 2021
- 456 IRS-trained professionals volunteered, 100 more than last year
This program eases financial struggles for families by connecting them to the refunds they deserve. It also strengthens our community’s economic stability since these refunds are in turn reinvested into the San Antonio economy.
VITA is powered by a partnership between United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the City of San Antonio and Catholic Charities. Each year it provides free tax preparation services for filers earning up to $55,000. It helps families pay their bills, and save money for the future by avoiding preparer fees.
