FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County launched the 10th annual Shoebox Project today, an initiative that provides shoeboxes full of basic necessities and essentials to people in need.

United Way has a goal of distributing more than $100,000 with daily essentials like toiletries, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes and other items to people in need in San Antonio. This cannot be accomplished without the support of the public, who are encouraged to donate today to help your fellow residents. With 46% of Bexar County residents living with financial hardship, donating to the Shoebox Project will provide relief to thousands of people in the community.

The public can donate directly to the Shoebox Project on uwsatx.org in several ways, including:

  • On United Way’s website
  • By texting SHOEBOXUWSAto 41444
  • By dropping off hygiene supplies or shoeboxes full of supplies at United Way’s office at 700 S. Alamo Street or at the San Antonio Food Bank at 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90 W.

“The lack of these basic necessities, many of which we take for granted, can negatively affect an individual’s mental health and put their physical well-being at risk,” said Jennifer Quintero, Director of Community Engagement for United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. “These shoeboxes provide a helping hand and a little peace of mind to our community’s children, veterans, elderly and houseless populations.”

Donations open today and will be accepted through May 17. Both individual basic necessities shoeboxes filled with supplies can be donated. Items needed include basic comforts like toothpaste, shampoo, baby wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, tampons, hair combs, adhesive bandages, toothbrushes, toothpaste and more.
