Each year, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County provided Child Care Scholarships to parents so they can pursue higher education without the stress of paying for quality child care. Powered by Women United, the United Way Child Care Scholarships provide multi-generational support for both the parent and their child.

The parents are able to pursue their education and career goals while achieving greater economic stability and their children are able to thrive as they learn in quality centers during these critical years of early childhood development.

Our child care scholar spotlight is Jennifer.

Pregnant with her daughter Scarlett and in the middle of her degree program, Jennifer was unsure how she would complete school while working to pay for child care. With the United Way Child Care Scholarship, she was able to graduate college without any delay.

“The scholarship was a big financial relief for me,” said Jennifer. “I was able to work and take classes and not postpone finishing my degree. Now, I have a degree and a career thanks to the support of the scholarship along with the staff from Women United and United Way.”

With the help of United Way, Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a Specialization in Special Education from Our Lady of the Lake University. Jennifer also started her first teaching job! She plans on going back to school to pursue her master’s degree after a few years in her new career as a teacher.

Her daughter Scarlett benefited tremendously from the child care center she attended as well. A example of the multigenerational impact United Way Scholarships can have, Scarlett is thriving educationally. “They have increased my daughter’s social and emotional skills,” Jennifer said. “They (the center) feel like a second family to us.”

Jennifer is just one example of how the United Way Child Care Scholarships make a multigenerational impact on parents and their children. 13 scholars are on track to graduate this May and applications for Fall 2023 scholarships are open now until April 24.
