United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s annual school-supply drive, the Write Start Project, was a tremendous success this year with $34,000 in classroom supplies given out to teachers in North East Independent School District (NEISD).

People from the community, United Way corporate partners and many more donated school supplies like composition books, pencils, markers and more, supporting educators so they can spend less out of their own pockets.

Research shows that Texas school teachers spend more out of their own pockets than teachers from any other state, spending an estimated $298 million on supplies out of pocket during the 2022-23 school year. The average teacher in the U.S. spends at least $800 out of their own pocket each year.

This year’s drive saw 150+ volunteers organize, assemble and deliver school supplies to over 1,500 teachers throughout NEISD at 35 different schools.

The Write Start Project is just one way that United Way provides relief to educators in the community. With 45% of Bexar County residents living with financial hardship, countless educators and students will be positively impacted by having these supplies at no cost to themselves.
