United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County is honored to have been selected for an Accelerator grant from the Ascend at the Aspen Institute, joining the 2Gen Accelerator Community in the process. The 2Gen Accelerator Community is a collection of nonprofits who employ whole-family approaches to service.

This generous grant will empower United Way to drive change in the community so that more families can experience educational success, economic security and improved well-being.

Specifically, this grant will be used to strengthen families through United Way’s Dual Generation Initiative. Dual Generation uses a family-centered approach to connect parents living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level with tools they need to increase economic opportunities for themselves and their families. Dual Generation currently serves over 300 families, most of which are single-parent households living on San Antonio’s east and west sides. While parents gain new professional skills, their children receive high-quality early education and care. Giving parents and children the opportunity to succeed together best positions families to thrive.

Ascend at the Aspen Institute selected United Way for its front-edge solutions to dismantling inequities and working with families to build new pathways to success.

United Way has received previous grants from the Ascend Network since 2020, focused on 2Gen approaches to supporting family well-being. These grants have supported United Way’s impact over the years, including the creation of the Family School Community Partnership (the Partnership), which was designed to create an improved network of communication between parents, students, teachers, and principals to improve the academic performance of the students. The Partnership was shaped by the parents for the parents and supported new approaches to repair the connection between schools and caregivers.

United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County will work alongside the other organizations in the 2Gen Accelerator Community to amplify strategies and drive change for families who are most likely to face economic injustices. Organizations in the 2Gen Accelerator Community will also participate in peer learning and engage lawmakers to help strengthen support services available for families nationwide.
