United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County is proud to announce the launch of Military Dual Generation, a first-of-its-kind military-specific initiative launching in two communities. Built on a proven two-generation approach, this initiative is designed to empower military-affiliated families in San Antonio, Texas, and Tampa Bay, Florida. The Military Dual Gen initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by military families, including barriers to employment, high-quality child care and gaps in support resources. This will be accomplished by providing intentional and personalized, family-centered support.

The initiative is made possible through a $1.8 million investment from USAA over three years, underscoring a shared commitment to strengthening military families and the communities they call home.

Rooted in research from leading organizations, Military Dual Gen focuses on three key drivers of family well-being:

  • Employment and Workforce Development: Offering personalized job readiness, training, and placement support, particularly for military spouses and transitioning veterans.
  • Access to Affordable, High-Quality Child Care: Connecting families to childcare solutions that enable parents to work or pursue training.
  • Coordinated Wraparound Services: Providing navigation support for mental health, housing, financial coaching, and other essential social services.

Military Dual Gen complements existing Department of Defense (DoD) programs by serving families both on and beyond military installations, including active-duty spouses, dependents, Guard and Reserve populations and veterans. Through a high-touch, coach-led model, families with military connections will receive tailored guidance and wraparound services, ensuring a streamlined and supportive experience.

San Antonio and Tampa Bay were selected as pilot sites due to their high concentrations of military-affiliated families. Bexar County is home to over 80,000 active-duty personnel and 56,000 veterans of parenting age, while Tampa Bay supports nearly 100,000 veterans and 19,000 MacDill Air Force Base personnel. Military Dual Generation mobility-focused approach will also help families transition smoothly to new duty stations through partnerships across the United Way network.

United Way’s proven ability to lead collective impact initiatives, such as Mission United and Dual Generation, positions it as a trusted partner in driving measurable outcomes for military families.

“With USAA’s support and generous investment, we can empower military families and deliver lasting change for communities across multiple states,” said Chris Martin, President and CEO of United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County
