United Way’s MISSION UNITED (military program) recently extended support to local Veterans and their families in need of a little extra help during the recent holidays.

Partnering with Grace After Fire, The Salvation Army, and the St Philip’s College Good Samaritan Veteran’s Outreach and Transition Center, Veterans and their family members were provided HEB or Walmart gift cards, holiday gifts, food bags (courtesy of the Salvation Army), as well as an information packet outlining community resources. Funding for the gift cards was provided by Mr. Joseph Haynes and a small group of caring Veterans and citizens who wanted to share holiday support for those in need.

The recipients, over 50 families, were selected from veteran agencies/programs: Audie Murphy VA (social workers), UTSA (military program), Lackland FSgt’s Group, JBSA Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), Grace After Fire, SAMMinistries, American GI Forum, and MISSION UNITED 2-1-1 Veteran callers.

Out of concern about highly stressed and vulnerable military families, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County created Mission United, a military information and referral program, in 2015. This program helps military and veteran families navigate the robust, but complex, array of community and military support programs.

MISSION UNITED can be reached by calling 2-1-1, our 24/7/365 free and confidential phone service dedicated to connecting people with community, health, and disaster services. Our special Military Navigators assist active duty and fellow Veteran and military families in navigating the maze of health and human service programs available in the San Antonio area.

We will connect you to the best military or Veteran resources and benefit information based on branch of service, status of service including Veterans and active duty, and by category, such as behavioral health, education and employment, financial assistance and more.
