United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County recently announced a partnership with Humana Military to launch a Military Community Needs Assessment. This collaborative effort aims to learn more about our local resource landscape and identify the most critical issues that service members, Veterans, and their families face. It will also recommend areas of future focus for maximal impact going forward.

The military community encounters a variety of issues, some unique to their service like frequent moves, separations, and other challenges specific to their lifestyle. Just like all Americans they face issues with food insecurity, housing, financial stability, education, isolation, quality childcare and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County encourages members of the military and veteran community to participate in the assessment, whether you are a family member, active-duty, reservist, guard or a Veteran regardless of service era. With the broad scope of organizations and services in the area, we welcome all perspectives and experiences to ensure diverse feedback. If you are interested in participating or want to encourage someone you know to participate, please inquire about the study here.

With one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the country, San Antonio has a unique vantage point of the needs of a military community. The feedback gathered in this study will shape the future of resource funding and availability in the San Antonio and Bexar County region.

The Center for a New American Society will perform the assessment and collect public input. We will share the results with our community partners later this year. If interested in receiving regular updates on the progress of the Military Community Needs Assessment and keeping up-to-date on events and activities that are military-specific please send an email to mission-united@gaggle.email and request to be added to MISSION UNITED Necessities.

As the leading social service funder in Military City USA, making sure we maintain a comprehensive understanding of the specific needs of our military neighbors, their families and Veterans is critically important to uniting our community to identify and solve our most critical issues. San Antonio should not just be known as a town with a large military population but as a community where military families can know with confidence that they have access to the absolute best resources and specialized support.
