For many fathers, their first time becoming a parent sends them on a crash course of learning behaviors and nurturing techniques that they had never been taught before. Fathers can be overlooked at times when it comes to parenting education and support services, something that United Way’s HOPES (Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Early Support) aims to change through its investment in fatherhood program services.

United Way HOPES Partner, The Children’s Shelter, helps fathers grow as caregivers through their 15-week program, Compadre y Compadre. For a local father, John*, this support has been life-changing for him and his family.

“Fatherhood is a crucial aspect of a child’s upbringing, yet it’s often overlooked,” John said. “Seeing a program focused specifically on fathers immediately caught my attention.”

Right from the start, John felt welcomed and valued by the fatherhood program. The program would go on to exceed his expectations. Throughout the course, fathers explore the role they will play in their child’s development and gain invaluable insight into communication strategies, emotional connection and learn positive parenting practices.

“Some of the information was eye-opening,” he explained. “We learned about the father’s role during pregnancy and how our involvement impacts a child’s development. From a baby’s first heartbeat to the development of their hearing, understanding these stages helped me better appreciate my role as a father.”

John says that he gained a deeper understanding of fatherhood and his role in his children’s lives. Today, he is able to connect with his children in ways he didn’t think were possible.

“I find connecting with my children easier and more meaningful than ever before,” John said. “The program strengthened my confidence and reminded me of the influence I have in their lives.”

This support helps fathers learn how to center themselves in the difficult moments that happen in every parenting journey.

“I will forever give my children all my love. I will strive to be an example of a good man for my children and those around me. This program changed me for the better, and I will never forget the importance of my role as a father.”

United Way’s HOPES is a community grant that invests in innovative resources that support families with young children between the ages of 0 to 5. This support includes services that build protective factors, like parent support groups, early literacy promotion, parent education and more.

Programs like this can change the outlook of a family by giving parents the knowledge and confidence they need to build a brighter future for their children.
