A single mother, Tasha thought going back to college while working to pay for her son’s child care would be impossible. Living paycheck to paycheck while facing the stress of unpaid bills accumulating, Tasha refused to idle on her journey to provide more for her family. With the United Way Child Care Scholarship, she is finally able to pursue her education without the burden of balancing work and college.

“Thanks to United Way, my family’s financial situation has significantly improved,” Tasha said. “I now possess a stable career that offers opportunities for growth and success. I can now support my family comfortably, alleviating concerns about whether I can afford basic needs for the month,” she added.

Not only has Tasha thrived in her postsecondary education, her son has excelled in a quality early learning environment due to the scholarship. “The child care center has established a nurturing environment for my son to develop, learn and form friendships,” she says. “He has genuinely transformed into a kind, affectionate and social individual within the center.”

With the support of the scholarship, Tasha has found her calling in helping others as she pursues a career as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). She will graduate this spring from San Antonio College with an associate’s degree in applied science human services including specialization in addiction counseling. She will then continue pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human services so she can help individuals overcome substance abuse.

“United Way has instilled in me the confidence, as a single mother, to strive for an improved life both for myself and my children. I firmly believe that without their generosity I would not be in my current position.”

The United Way Child Care Scholarship, which empowers over 80 parents like Tasha to achieve their career and academic dreams, is the signature cause of Women United.
