FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program successfully filed taxes for 23,097 individuals, connecting them to $31.6 million in refunds. These VITA users saved $5.2 million in tax-prep fees since VITA is completely free for filers with household income up to $60,000.

This shows a dramatic increase over the money saved by VITA users during the 2023 tax season, which saw 21,000 users save $4 million in fees and receive $28.6 million in refunds. One of the potential factors for this increase in users was changing the income threshold from $55,000 to $60,000 and as well as VITA pop-up tax clinics that took place throughout the community.

Individuals who missed the April 15 tax deadline can still use VITA to have their taxes prepared by a trained, friendly volunteer for the rest of 2024. The following VITA locations are still open and ready to assist residents who missed the deadline. Please call 2-1-1 for hours of operation.

  • Guadalupe Community Center, 1801 W. Cesar Chavez Blvd.
  • Willie C. Velasquez Center, 1302 N. Zarzamora Street
  • Philip’s College, 1801 Martin Luther King Blvd.

Each of these sites offer tax-preparation services in Spanish. VITA is brought to the community through a partnership between United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, Catholic Charities and the City of San Antonio.

For video and photos of residents filing their taxes with a trained VITA tax preparer, please visit the 2024 VITA press kit. For more information on VITA, please visit vitasa.org.
