FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — We are excited to announce that United Way Child Care Scholarships applications for the spring 2024 semester are now open! These scholarships provide subsidized child care to parents pursuing higher education or job training so that they can increase their family’s economic stability without having to worry about the high cost of child care.

The annual cost of child care (an $9,300 average in Texas) is difficult for many San Antonio families to afford, often forcing parents to delay or cancel their higher education plans altogether. The scholarship removes this financial barrier to education for recipients, who receive an average award of $14,000 for quality child care.

Recipients can enroll their children in accredited centers that provide high-quality developmental care, without having to worry about the impact on their finances. This means each scholarship has a multi-generational impact as it allows the parent to improve their family’s economic stability through their education while also keeping their child’s early development on track in high-quality child care centers.

After receiving a record 70 scholarship applications for the Fall 2023 semester, we have made the application process more accessible.

  • Applications can now be more easily submitted on mobile phones.
  • Two references are now required instead of a letter of recommendation.
  • The application process should take one hour or less.

The United Way Child Care Scholarships are powered by United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s Women United. Women United is a dynamic membership of women who support the work of United Way to create lasting change in our community. Earlier this year, Women United raised $230,000 for the scholarship program.

Applications for Spring 2024 scholarships are open from today, August 21, through October 15. San Antonio residents are encouraged to apply on uwsatx.org when applications open.
