Kevin, a local third-grade student, was behind in math proficiency and at risk of falling behind in his education. Then his grandmother enrolled him in a United Way tutoring program through Family Service Association, “Multiply Your Future.”
With frequent after-school tutoring, Kevin gained a stronger understanding of math and began excelling in the classroom again. His academic journey was transformed for the better through this twice-per-week tutoring, which he attended for two years.
“He needed that time with somebody who can help him one on one and he made it through,” his grandmother said.
After several years of tutoring support, Kevin achieved the best score in his school district on his math STAAR test. About to enter the 6th grade, he is experiencing academic success with As and Bs on his report cards.
This support helps students like Kevin achieve greater math-proficiency through in-school and out-of-school resources.
Kevin’s academic progress is made possible by United Way’s Successful Students Impact work and also aligns with the Future Ready Bexar County Plan. The Future Ready Plan aims to increase postsecondary enrollment of local high school graduates to 70% by 2030. By providing out-of-school-time resources like math tutoring, students like Kevin gain greater access to high-quality learning, which will lead to improved career opportunities in the future.
With support, Kevin was able to improve his math proficiency and is now reaping the benefits as he prepares for middle school and enters the next stage of his academic journey.
