Two years ago, “Abby” arrived at Boysville’s emergency shelter broken from a difficult childhood.

Boysville is “a home with a heart” to children who are orphaned, homeless, abandoned, abused, neglected, or experiencing family crisis. This United Way Safety Net partner works hard to break the cycle of abuse and neglect in families while preparing girls and boys, infants to young adults, for success in adulthood.

As Abby transitioned through Boysville’s programs (Emergency Shelter, Residential Care, followed by Supervised Independent Living), she formed friendships with other residents and staff. Not only did her social skills improve, but her communication skills, education, and independence skills also flourished.

In high school, Abby was a member of ROTC and was a finalist for queen of their military ball. She graduated high school on time, is now employed and working toward furthering her education at a community college. Her plan is to join the military to proudly serve her country and embark on a nursing career.

“Abby is a ray of sunshine and a breath of fresh air for everyone at Boysville, said Paula Tucker, Boysville CEO. “She is kind, respectful, but most importantly, confident in herself. Her positive outlook motivates and inspires staff – and everyone else she encounters, including other younger residents.”

Boysville, a United Way Safety Net nonprofit partner, has been able to serve the San Antonio community for 78 years and will continue to move forward. Just like Abby.
