FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As a trusted convener of community leaders, services and people, we are excited to announce the release of a new needs assessment focused on the San Antonio military community. With a goal of improving services available for our military community, the “Greater San Antonio Military & Veteran Family Needs Assessment” takes a holistic look into the challenges that our local military community faces today. Commissioned by United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County and Humana Military, research was performed by The Center for a New American Society (CNAS).

Researchers surveyed active-duty members, veterans and spouses for their personal experiences with services in the community. They also interviewed stakeholders and community leaders. Based on their feedback, the report concentrates on five specific challenges: health, housing, financial stability, education, and social support. It also offers recommendations for how local government, academic institutions and military-serving organizations can better assist San Antonio’s military community.

“While our city is known as ‘Military City U.S.A.’ and is world-renowned for being welcoming to its service members, challenges remain,” said Andrew Sasseville, Senior Vice President of Accountability and Community Services for United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. “Our entire community is struggling with the effects of the pandemic, the rising costs of living and access to health care. Our military families face these and additional, unique challenges.”

San Antonio has an estimated population of 159,000 veterans and 80,000 active-duty service members. Roughly 16.7% of the population is currently serving or has previously served in the military.

United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County serves the military community through Mission United and throughout all our impact focus areas. With Mission United, United Way is dedicated to the well-being of service-connected members and their families. Through Mission United, we assist military families as they navigate the robust but complex array of military support programs available. Our 2-1-1 Helpline employs trained Military Navigators who assist active-duty, veteran and military families through the maze of services available locally.
