United Way 7th Annual Shoebox Project

Personal care items provided to local children, veterans, elderly, and homeless

The United Way 7th annual Shoebox Project has kicked off and runs through Fri., May 28, 2021, and seeks the public’s help to create 10,500 personal-care shoeboxes filled with basic-need items for clients at 64 agencies.

Individuals and organizations throughout Bexar County are invited to donate decorated shoeboxes filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, soap, shaving cream, shampoo and other hygiene items.

Nonprofit partners receiving boxes will distribute them to children in emergency shelters, long-term group homes, wards of the state, needy families, abused women and children, local teens, lonely seniors and many others. It’s one small way to help those who live on the edge and provide dignity to those who inched closer because of COVID-19.

Shoeboxes will be provided to hospital advocates to distribute to homeless clients. Parent-child education programs, Early Head Start and Head Start programs, and family development workers will receive boxes for those families most in need. Boxes will be shared with early childhood, youth services, education, family strengthening, promatoras, seniors, and mental health department programs. Children in the SAISD school district who identify as homeless, at risk, or simply in need of hygiene items will receive a box, and individual deliveries will be made to homeless veterans.

Shoebox Project supporters have the opportunity to join in during Community Shoebox Volunteer Days at the San Antonio Food Bank on May 15, 19, 29 and Jun. 2, 2021.

The 2021 United Way Shoebox Project is possible through the generosity of these sponsors and participating organizations: H-E-B Tournament of Champions, USAA, San Antonio Shoes, San Antonio Food Bank, and United Way.
