Honoring Military Children

Military Youth are Resilient in Constant Change
May 13, 2021

May is Military Appreciation Month and we are paying tribute to the resilience and tenacity of our military children. There are over 1.6 million active duty, National Guard, Reserve and children of veterans who face unique experiences and challenges because of their parents' service.*

Military families move on average every two to three years, impacting their children through changing schools and support networks.* They may also endure long separations from their parents and many times spend holidays and milestones apart from the guidance and support of those they love the most. While life in a military family can include exploring new places and exposure to other cultures, it can also bring frustration, loneliness and struggles in school.

At United Way, we are committed to preparing all children for college, work and life. Our Successful Students Impact Council partners with Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph Youth Programs. Together we’re working to support students and guardians in overcome obstacles to school attendance such as health conditions, mental illness, housing instability and lack of transportation. Chronic absenteeism derails student success.

Many families -- both military and non-military -- underestimate the importance of regular school attendance. Research shows that:

  • One in 10 kindergarten and 1st grade students miss 10 percent of the school year, the point at which absences start to affect test scores.
  • By middle school, chronic absenteeism can predict high school dropout rates.
  • By 9th grade, it’s a better predictor than past 8th grade test scores.**

Military kids are resilient in constant change. They are resourceful and creative support networks for their families and communities. We are proud to honor military children and the sacrifices and contributions they make along with their parents.
