A Single Father, Peter Was Stuck

Respite Care and Hope Move Him Forward
December 3, 2021

“Peter,” a single father, couldn’t move forward. He couldn’t accept job offers or pursue employment opportunities to stabilize his family of two because he did not have adequate childcare for his three-year-old son, “Jackson,” who needed special care.

Respite Care of San Antonio, Inc., a United Way nonprofit partner, was able to step in and care for Jackson, providing speech evaluation and other special services and referrals so Peter could inform potential employers that he was now available to work.

Assisting Peter with registering for Child Care Services through the City of San Antonio, Respite Care also enrolled him in the HOPES III program facilitated by United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County.

HOPES, or Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Early Support, is a Texas Department of Family and Protective Services grant that funds a wide variety of innovative initiatives and supports for families with children 0-5 years of age, including parent support groups, early literacy promotion, case management, parent education and other services.

The United Way HOPES grant includes a local collaboration of nonprofits focusing on health care, child welfare, early childhood education, and other child and family services in the community. The grant, awarded in 2017, supports the work of United Way’s Ready Children and Individuals and Families Impact Councils.

Respite Care of San Antonio was Peter’s answer to getting his life and family back on track. Respite Care aids families and create a safe haven for children in crisis. The nonprofit cares for a child or loved one with developmental disabilities, offers parents respite breaks from caring for their child with special needs, and provides children requiring daily medical treatments access to onsite pediatric specialists. The organization’s mission also includes caring for special needs children who have been taken into protective custody as a result of abuse and neglect.

Because of the community collaboration and compassion of Respite Care, United Way’s HOPES grant partners and access to local city services, Peter and Jackson are well positioned to move forward together, working toward reaching their full potential as a stable and loving family.
